Laluwissen Peak

After a day of ice climbing in Marble Canyon, Alex and I wanted to get out one on hike to cap off the weekend. The only good weather to be found was in the Lillooet and Lytton area and we happened to be staged perfectly to take advantage of it. Our options were a bit limited with the avalanche conditions and so I narrowed in on a group of peaks just north of Lytton. These rarely have much snow and there’s lots of low angle summits to pick from. Laluwissen Peak, seemed like the best of the options and if weather cooperated it should have phenomenal views of the steep giants west of the Fraser River.

Alex liked the idea and so on Sunday morning we set off from a discrete car camping spot up to the Laluwissen Creek FSR. The road was in great shape and we managed to drive even further than expected up the spur road on the mountain itself. We hit snow around 6km from the summit and opted to walk from here.

This was mostly an excercise in road walking, but eventually we broke through a cut block and ended up on an expansive vista looking over the Fraser. The horizon was filled with steep chossy looking summits as far as the eye could see. We dove back into the cutblock and then reached a small section of untouched forest up to the summit. This area had the usual flavours of deadfall and unconsolidated snow but it was hardly an impediment.

After our visit to the summit we walked back along our tracks to the road and then reached the car a few kilometers later. Then it’s a long drive home, through some pouring rain and a great a conclusion to the weekend.
